Phebe Simmons is referenced in the History of the town of Surry, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Phoebe served the family of Simon Baxter for 5 generations; was included in the dowery of Baxter daughter Margaret. Phoebe was given a lump sum and pension ; she became a boarder of Charles Robinson in Keene until her death in 1886.

Miss Phoebe Simmons, q. v., the negro, came to
family when a girl, and remained in members of the Baxter and
Robinson families until her d. in 1886. He was selectman, 1804 and constable,
1805.

Joseph^?) was constable in S. 1827-28, selectman four years, moderator six
years, treasurer, 1841, and represented the town in the General Court 1837-38.
He was a school master when a young man, and delivered the address at the
dedication of the village bell.
He lived at No. 23 a few years then in the
1824 at No. 102 where he lived till March 1850 when he bought

She lived at No. 116 for many years then removed to Keene with

the Robinson family; her record follows:

she had lived for ten years, at the age of 86 years.
She was well
known to many as a colored woman of estimable personal characterisAfter living in the Baxter family some years, Mrs. Margaret
Baxter gave her to her granddaughter, Mrs. Jonathan Robinson, about
1823, and she remained in the Robinson family until her d.
At the
death of Mrs. Baxter, as was the custom in those times, provided that
Phoebe should have "One upper bed, one under bed, bedstead and cord,
one pair of sheets, two pairs of sheets, two pairs of pillow-cases, two
blankets and three outside bed-coverings, one tablecloth and three
towels, one table and three chairs, some crockery, her clothing, and one
cow." Phoebe was regarded with peculiar affection; was known to five
generations of the family and at d. left a sister living with Peter Evans
of Charlestown; at 90 years of age. "Aunt Phoebe," as she was called,
w^as buried in the Robinson family lot in Woodland cemetery, Keene,
where a headstone marks her grave.
